OIS 06070, Rhode Island
For years, the U.S. Navy trains its officer corps in the medical service at Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, Rhode Island - taking in raw recruits and turning out medical professionals to serve aboard carriers and naval bases around the world.

After five weeks of marching, training and being yelled at by drill instructors, my brother completed the grueling course along with fellow OIS classmates in a ceremony steeped in over two centuries of Navy history and tradition on a bright Saturday morning to an audience of family and friends.

But there is work to do, calls to make, people to contact - so I leave you, as always, with photos.

More soon.

The top left photo (00039dek) is a very artful touch.

Congrats to your brother.
The Naval War College is just across the water from me - in fact, I go over that bridge all the time (here's an icon of it) so that's pretty cool to hear he was there. We passed some ceremonies the past few weekends with folks in Navy whites... wonder if he was at either of them? Looks like the ceremony was on the campus itself, though, so maybe not.

Good for him; hope he ends up someplace he enjoys!

Ceremony was on the campus, so yeah, probably not. :P

I'm a Midshipman, myself, finishing up my senior year to join the merchant fleet. I'm no family friend, I know, but as you know, your brother has achieved something amazing.

Fair winds and following seas to him from a still-aspiring officer.

Same to you!

Any idea where you will be placed?

I'll most likely go union and either sail as a relief engineer for a while or take a permanent job with a company, depending on how the winds of opportunity blow. The pay's generally good ($10K-$15K a month) with the obvious perc of seeing the world. It may have lost much of the romanticism of Yore, but sailing is definitely a real-life dream job. Awesome.

It's OIS, I don't know what OIC stands for. OTCN is Officer Training Command Newport, if that's what you were hoping for, but it's "OIS Class 06070". Can you post all the photos online somewhere where I can download the batch in full res? Thank ya.
