Accelerating Change 2005

Attended the Accelerating Change 2005 conference at Stanford this weekend and reconnected with dozens of familiar people and quite a few new faces.

Few notables:

  • Favorite quote, from Eliezer Yudkowsky

Moore's Law of Mad Scientists: The minimum IQ required to destroy the world drops by one point every 18 months.

  • Came across the awesome Crocker's Rule: people are allowed to optimize their messages for information, not for being nice to you ... One of the big problems with this culture is that everyone's afraid to tell you you're wrong, or they think they have to dance around it.

Anyone else who wishes to operate by Crocker's Rule (or have been doing so unknowingly), please say aye!

As a relative newcomer to the community of artificial Intelligence/nanotechnology research, I am still reeling from the firehose of information and talks I absorbed from speakers and sidebar conversations during this weekend.

Begun reading Ray Kurzweil's The Singularity is Near and actively looking for books/dialogue on related topics.

Until then ...
